Complete Fertility Welcomes the Increased Awareness of the Risk of Unregulated Sperm Donors
A man acting as an unregulated sperm donor was recently named by a family court because the judge wanted to protect women. It was deemed to be in the public interest after the sperm donor, who claims to have fathered more than 180 children, wanted parental rights over a child.
According to the BBC, the judge stated:
"Women and children appear to be almost a commodity to him as he sets about increasing the number of his children around the globe – China, USA, Argentina, Australia and UK to name just some of the countries where he has fathered children."
According to Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), over half (59%) of new sperm donors in 2022 were from donor imports, whereas 96% of new egg donors were UK-based in 2022. Yet around 1 in 170 of all children born in the UK are conceived through donation of egg or sperm.
Georgina Collins, Clinic Director comments:
“This is an incredibly sad case because it took a huge physical and mental toll on the same sex couple who sought the donor. Sadly unregulated donors who advertise online and via social media can be unscrupulous and that is why we always advise patients to use a regulated egg and sperm donor programme from a licensed clinic. We can offer our patients donor eggs and sperm with little to no delay. However, like all clinics across the country, we are appealing for more sperm donors to come forward in 2025.
Sperm donation, the facts:
