Complete Fertility Welcomes the Increase in Compensation for Sperm and Egg Donors
According to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) every year, around 1 in 170 of all children born in the UK are conceived through donation of egg or sperm.
From 1st October the compensation for donating eggs and sperm is increasing:
- Egg donors: £985 (an increase from £750)
- Sperm donors: £45 per clinic visit (an increase from £35)
This increase in compensation was required to address increases in inflation and expenses incurred by a donor as they go through the process.
Julie Hedges, donor coordinator explains:
“We are proud of our egg and sperm donor programme which ensures we can offer our patients donor eggs with little to no delay. We offer the same from our sperm bank but like all fertility clinics UK-wide, we need to increase our donations.
A sperm donor will usually attend around 18 appointments and the increase in compensation to cover the cost of attending is very welcome. The number of new UK sperm donors is decreasing year on year whilst egg donors is increasing[1] and this is why we are appealing for more donors.”

According to HFEA, over half (59%) of new sperm donors in 2022 were from donor imports, whereas 96% of new egg donors were UK-based in 2022.
Donating eggs, sperm, or embryos is a significant commitment with implications. Donors need to be prepared for the possibility that any child born from their donation will have the right to access identifying information about them once they reach the age of 18.
